Another big stick from London's mayor

Owner of a gas-guzzler who chooses to drive in central London's Congestion Charge zone will have to pay 25 pounds PER DAY as carbon tax, according to this ABC report.

Ouch!

Applaud!!!

Finally there is somebody who doesn't care about committing 'political subside" and add carbon tax to his agenda. Not a small amount we are talking about either, 25 pounds per day is around 14 grant Aussie dollars per year. I probably will start drafting a "car for sale/recycle" ad if I were in London right now.

As harsh as it sounds, I cannot think of a more effective way to reduce carbon emission. I am all ears for those voluntary programs such as carbon rebate but I don't think good will along can save us from catastrophe events at this point.

On the other hand I do hope there will be a big complementary carrot pretty soon, government subsidized free/dirt cheap alternative transport system that runs either on human power or clean energy, for instance.

Update: Ken Livingston is a rather controversial figure. Not sure how much his loss in the election has to be contributed to his own character vs. Labor's overall failure.
