Yes we do have AC and powered windows etc now, and those features consume gasoline as well. We made a trade off between convenience and efficiency. Another trade-off is between speed/time and efficiency--""If you drive at 110kmh you use more fuel than if you drive at 70kmh."

Perhaps it's time to revisit these trade-offs.
