Pragmatic vs. idealistic

I have always enjoyed reading Tom Friedman, so I feel sorry for him when some Greenwash Guerrillas pied him on Earth Day, before he was giving a presentation in Brown University. For these guerrillas Friedman's support for free trade, clean coal and nuclear power is green-washing. Of course his support for Iraq war doesn't help either.

It seems to me the conflict boils down to philosophical differences. Friedman, or people like him, are pragmatists who want to work with the current system and gradually make things better; the guerrillas are more idealistic who prefer to demolish anything they don't like overnight. The question is how you tell green washing from being pragmatically green?
