Temporary Permanent Residency granted

We got a letter today saying they granted my Permanent Residency (PR). But it is only a temporary thing and they will revalue our relationship in two years and decide if it is going to be PR-worthy.

PR is an equivalent to the Green Card in the States as far as I understand. But it is a lot easier to get. MM tried his luck with a US green card and that took forever. He almost got it but in the end he gave up when moving with me to Australia. We only lodged our application in early June and got the approval within two months, including a week we spent on gathering more supporting documents that we didn't turn in at first place. So the Australian Immigration is very productive I have to say.

The funny bit though, is they mentioned in the same letter that my passport had expired in 2006. Obviously they did not pay much attention to one passport page saying "now extended to 2011". Make you wonder 1) whether they looked through everything we turned in, and 2) why they even gave me the temporary PR if I don't have a valid passport?
