Shanah Tovah

It means Happy New Year in Hebrew, though I still said it in English when talking to MM Mama this afternoon. Tomorrow is Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

According to my Judaism for Dummies book, this is a holiday of judgment, a time to ask yourself whether you have been on track on your goals. Different from other cultures, the New Year spirit is to be solemn (rather than having fun).

Good news is that Jewish people still like to eat sweet and round things for their New Year's Day. Even Challah is supposed to be nicely rounded. I made four of them--we are leaving for China soon and we will not have an access to Challah for a while thus the overdose.

Yes yes I know it is not pretty enough--I didn't have time to figure out how to make the braided round ones so this is my dummy version. Taste very good though :)
