I just came back from a business trip in Cairns. Nice sunshine and definitely a good timing to get out of cold Canberra and even colder MM house (our house heater broke down a month ago and we still haven't heard from our landlord/agent in term of when it can be fixed).
Impression #1. Prius for taxi.
I was surprised to see bunch of Prius at the airport taxi line. Nice. I haven't seen that in any other OZ city before (Let's see--I have been to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and of course Canberra). Prius is my dream car but it is just so expensive in Australia. Sigh.
Impression #2. Tiny.
Cairns is rather small. My hotel was at one end and my conference site was at the other end of CBD. Yet it only took me less than 15 mintues to travel in between by walking.
Impression # 3. One bird is lovely, 100 is annoying.
Birds in Cairns are better singers in general, whenever they performed solo that was. But they had a tendency to sing all together...
Impression # 4. It is freezing as long as it is below 17C!
On my way to the airport my taxi driver commented it was going to be "freezing" that night. I was shocked because I had my AC on blowing cold air the night before. It turns out for him it will be frezzing as long as the temperature is below 17C! Speaking of being spoiled rotten.
