the 2nd Family & Community Day

aka. Melbourne Cup Day in ACT.

Some colleagues still think it is a joke to call it Family & Community Day. In reality it just gave people an excuse to go home to watch the race. It is only a holiday in ACT and Victoria after all, all the rest of the country is still working.

But why not? I was told that usually people would have a drinking party at work in front of a giant TV anyway. If they don't work they may as well go home to their family. Plus, it is such a wonderful time of the year and who doesn't want a day wonder around?

This is exactly MM and I did. We hired a bike for me by the lake. For one thing we could ride around for a while and also we are in the process of buying me a bike. So we are trying different models out to see which one fits me best.

We ended up riding 25 km around the lakes. Considering I hadn't been on a bike for about four years that was a lot. I even tried a couple of models: one road-bike and one mountain bike.

It was a beautiful day and there were plenty of people outdoors, even during the racing time. Somebody else hired a family model...

Here is a black swan family: Mum and the kids were having a nap and the father was on guard.

A closer shot:

They are not afraid of humans at all. At one point MM got quite close to Mr Swan and he could not to be bothered to move a single bit. Later on we met another swan family who got closer to us when hearing our footsteps--they were expecting some food.
